different fonts for masthead

Masthead Font choices:
ALT
I did not use this font because i believe it is not eye catching, exiting, individual, and is too plain. This would not of suited the type of audience my magazine is aimed at.
ALT
I did not use this because i believe it is not conventional to my music genre which is rebellious, and this is a more old fashion font.
ALT
I was going to use this font before i found the font i chose because it is individual, bold eye catching, but i felt as though it was not rebellious enough, which is a huge theme of my music genre.

ALT
I didnt use this as i believe it looks rather child like and is not suited to my music genre which is tough and rebellious.

LIIAR analysis (CLASH) Double page spread

Language -  The double page spread of the Clash magazine is focused on the artist on the front cover, Iggy Pop. He is also shown on the front cover as well. The first page of the double page spread has no images only text, however it still has some influence of Iggy Pop, In the title 'Raw power' there is a silhouette of Iggy pop on the A, this is so readers are aware the text will be about Iggy Pop. Even though its only a silhouette its very easy to see and recognise who it by his signature pose and the attitude in the silhouette.
The medium shot of the rebellious icon shows that he is performing as he has a microphone, in one hand and has his other hand in the air. The layout is very sophisticated like the rest of the magazine however it still has the wild attitude. The page has no images only text, The Title of  the article takes over the majority of the page, the Title is 'Raw Power' This shows the magazines attitude and its type of music, raw is usually associated with rock music and real music rather then pop and power is often associated with rock as in power in the rock and roll, this also relates back to the artist. Underneath this the articles starts, the first letter however is bigger than the rest of the article and in a different colour, this gives the article and magazine a more professional look also in famous fairytale book the first words of chapter also has a Big letter in a different font, its almost as if the article of this magazine is telling he fairytale story of Iggy Pop.

Ideology - Compared to the front cover and contents page the double page spread doesn't use the two colours pink and green, I think this is because the article is about Iggy Pop and not the magazine so it uses colours to represent Iggy Pop. The black background makes the rest of the colours stand out also black is often associated with rock attitude and darkness, much like Iggy Pops attitude. Red is another key colour used and red is often represents violence, passion and lust this also relates to Iggy Pop as when he performs he sometimes looks quite violent because he is so passionate about his music, he also has a song called 'Lust for life' and as the colour red is often associated with Lust it works quite well. The colour scheme of the double page spread (black, red and white) is part of the converntion look of the indie rock genre and will appeal the what audience and their own persona's.

Institution - Clash is an award-winning (Magazine of the Year – PPA 2008) monthly music magazine bringing originality and independent opinion in a truly unique style.
While music continues to diversify and evolve, Clash endeavours to represent the crossover appeal of all genres of music for the more discerning fan. Every month Clash features the best new emerging bands alongside established acts and legends of the industry.
Clash magazine a strong design focus as well as industry related articles - Clash is dedicated to Music and Fashion, which makes it is a monthly favourite among artists and labels.
The producer of the 'CLASH' magazine is a man called John O'Rourke, he has a music magazine called 'john@clashmusic.com' which is a magazine that is a personal magazine that is made for CLASH magazine.

Audience - The audience of the magazine is people who like keeping up with indie rock and other music genres (excluding pop, R&B and other mainstream genres) this because the magazine's main audience are not mainstream lovers, so this magazine provides the music the audience likes and wants to know. The magazine also covers a bit of fashion which help spread their audience to a different audience which is not related to music, this is good because they are appealing and attracting more customers to purchase their magazine.

Representation - The representation of the double page spread  of Iggy Pop shows him just how he is when he is performing. In the image Iggy Pop doesn't have eye contact with the readers, his eyes have been edited so they look darkened out however with or without his eye contact you aware its him by his bare chest, wild hair and his very thin physic. His face expression doesn't particular make him look atractive but the magazine isn't like a pop magazine where everybody is beautiful its about the music, so they haven't tried to make him look nice they tried to make him look like his true self. His body language with his arm in the air and a microphone in the other shows he is performing and also shows his passion for music. The image relates back to message of the magazine and views of the readers. The image shows Iggy Pop performing and showing his passion for music and his dedication to rock/indie music. This image shows this and reflects back on the audience.

LIIAR analysis (CLASH) contents page

Language - This contents page uses conventions such as a masthead, headings, splash, banner etc.
The masthead of the contents page is 'CONTENTS' and at the top of the page, this is conventional to a magazine as this enables the audience to know that this is the page that will direct you around the magazine easier, the writing of the text is is in big bold letters and is in a hot pink colour which stands out from the rest of the page. The use of little heading to label each stories and their page number allows the audience to see what stories are in the magazine and where to find them, these headlines are bigger and sometimes in colour to make them standout from the crowd which allows them to grab the audiences attention. The splash of 'Iggy and the stooges' and the picture of Iggy, shows that he is the main story within the magazine. their are banners at the bottom of the page which is informing the audience of the information that is located within, the title of the banner, is 'CLASH REVIEWS', this is in an opposite, very contrasting colour (white against black) and makes the heading stand out and grabs the audiences attention.
His face is not clearly seen and he is not giving eye contact to the audience, this is all part of his 'rockstar' persona. He is on his own in no top and shows that he is a rebellious figure which echos the genre he is representing. the black and white colour scheme within the picture reflects the genre of the magazine and the audience that reads it. The shot used on the front cover is a medium shot, this has been used as this shot is conventional to a magazine. This type of shot is used to show you more of the main image in the front cover, this is to allow you to see what type of clothes the model is wearing, this will give a represention on what type of person this is, as the image is in a black background and is in no top which is white, which creates a strong, typical representation of the rock/indie rock theme.

Ideology -  the colour scheme of the rest of the page is in green, white, pink and black. although these are not all conventional colours to the indie rock genre, the green is used only to emphasise a heading that the magazine is trying to promote, the pink is used to emphasise a heading and also for all of the numbers and the masthead which are two important factors of the page. The use of the light and fluoresent colours emphasise the main image of the page as that is in black and white which are typical indie themed colours, this allows the mainstory and image to stand out and allows to make the rest of the page seperate and informative if the reader is not interestedin the main story.

The magazine also covers a bit of fashion which help spread their audience to a different audience which is not related to music, this is good because they are appealing and attracting more customers to purchase their magazine.

representation - The main image represents a very non maintream look on life, whereas the rest of the page seems to be out of the music genre in regards to the colour scheme as they are using bright colours which doesnt relate to the audiences persona.
The main image represents the audience of the magazine and how the magazine is trying to represent itself to the world, as the main image has no top on he is seen as a rebellious character, this is echo'd by the fact that his hair is long and messy and he is screaming into the microphone, this relates to the audience by appealing to their non mainstream style.

conventions of genre (indie rock)

The use of dark colours such as red and black are seen as very rebellious colours and are usually accossiated with indie rock/rock. These colours and connotatations are reflected by the appearal of the music artists, for example 'Julian Casablancas' in the clash magazine front cover is dressed in all black with a red background this shows that he is a rebellious character.
catchy headlines are used to show music genre as they reach out to a specific (niche) genre audience and and will represent the genre the magazine carries.
the model/image that is used will represent a specific music genre as they will be dressed in certain clothing, wearing certain colours, have certain haircuts etc.

conventions of a music magazine (contents page)

Page numbers direct the audience where to find different feautures within the magazine.
captions for photos are used for informing the audience of things without having to put it into story form this will always catch the eye of the audience as they will always look at the picture and may not want to read the full story.
title (contents) shows the audience what all of the feautring stories are called, this entises the audience to read them.
the name of the magazine will consist throughout the magazine, even through the contents page.

conventions of a music magazine (front cover)

The masthead shows the title of the magazine making it regonisable, this is usually in big bold writing for the audience to clearly see what the magazine is called.
Main storylines are used to catch the readers attention and inform the audience of what stories are in the magazine that may appeal to them.
The use of a medium shot on the front cover of a magazine is to catch the audiences eye, it allows the audience to see the body language and facial expressions used to create the image of the genre of the magazine.
The use of an instrument in my magazine front cover reflects the music genre that is featuring in my magazine (indie rock).
the date line and issue number allows the audience to know if they are behind on their reading of the magazine and may encourage them to by the next or previous copy.
The use of a web address echos the fact that this is a new media i.e it reflects the young audience by useing a new source of information.

Front Cover First Draft

working on front cover

In this picture i have produced so far a mid shot picture of my model, a title (masthead) of my magazine and a banner for my skyline at the top of the page.
Th eimage i have taken has been cropped and blurred onto a redbackground and all proccessed on photoshop, the mast head of the magazine has been changed in my finished product as i took the 'The' from before the 'ALT' as i thought that this is more conventional to a magazine cover.
The reason i chose black and red as my colour scheme is becasue it is conventional to my music genre of indie rock, this is echo'd by the clothes that my model is wearing as she is dressed like an 'individual' (indie).

Music Magazine Front Cover images and explanations

although i like this picture, i did not use this picture for my front cover because she is not looking at the camera and caught some of the green in the background.
i also liked this picture but i believe that the lighting on her face is to strong and overwhelms the picture, plus it has caught some of the green in the background and this is why didn't use this picture.
i didn't use this because the lighting is to dark and she is in a long shot which is not conventional to a music magazine front cover and caught some of the green in the background.
i didnt use this picture as i believe that the guitar in this picture dominates the the picture over the model herself and caught some of the green in the background.
i didn't use this picture because i believe it is too dull in colour and not light enough.
again, i didn't use this image because the picture is not light enough.
i didn't use this picture because of the facial expression she is using, it doesn't look proffessional.
i really liked this picture but i didn't use it because the shot is in landscape and is not conventional to a music magazine front cover.
i didn't use this shot as most of the shot is blurry and is in a long shot which is not conventional to a magazine front cover.

i didn't use this shot because she is in a long shot and is not conventional to a magazine front cover, plus she is not looking at the camera and i caught some of the door in the background.
i didn't use this picture as she is not looking at the camera, but i did like the photo.

i used this picture because i believe it is not too light and not to dark, the way i thought it would fit onto my front cover worked well and it is a mid shot which is conventional to a magazine front cover, so i decided to use it.

Price, Published and why?

The price of my music magazine will be around £3.00 and will be published monthly.
The reason my magazine will be £3.00 is because it is cheap for the audience to buy, this links to the psychographical E band that i will be targeting my magazine towards. The reason my magazine will be published weekly is because it will reduce costs to make as i will not have to make as many (weekly), it will give my target audience time to save up and have some money spare to buy the magazine when it is published, another reason is that their will be more to put into the magazine that is exiting and will interest the reader therefore pleasing the reader and encouraging to buy the next issue.

Target audience (demographics and psysographics)

The audience my magazine will target is the people who listen and are interested in Indie rock and non mainstream music. My magazine is aimed at the demographical gender of both male and female, this is because both genders are interested in lots of non mainstream music (mainly indie rock). The demographical age that my magazine is aimed at will be 14 - 24 this is because non mainstream music such as indie rock is a very modern type of music to listen to so therefore will not interest an older gender.
My music magazine is aimed at the psychographical band of E as they will be probably unemployed/students, this is because this links to my demographical age range and the current economical enviroment.
