LIIAR analysis (CLASH) Front page

The first magazine i am going to analise is 'CLASH' this is a popular indie magazine and features one of the bands i listed in my music genre.

Language - This magazine front cover uses conventions such as a masthead, skyline, barcode, splash, kicker etc.
The masthead is big and bold which stands out from the magazine, this is to attract the magazine and so it it the first thing the audience will read.
The magazine tittle is short and memorable, this is so the audience  remember the tittle of the magazine. The main image is the lead member of 'The Strokes' this links to the main heading on the front cover, this is known as a splash. His face is not clearly seen and he is not giving eye contact to the audience, this is all part of his 'rockstar' persona. He is on his own in the middle which makes him the centre of attention as he is the dominant figure.
The black, white and red colour scheme is conventional to the rock/indie rock theme, the magazine also uses some teasing contents, this is located under the main heading 'THE STROKES'.
The shot used on the front cover is a medium shot, this has been used as this shot is conventional to a magazine. This type of shot is used to show you more of the main image in the front cover, this is to allow you to see what type of clothes the model is wearing, this will give a represention on what type of person this is, as the image is wearing black this shows a rebellious type of person which is contrasted against the red, black and red are a typical representation of the rock/indie rock theme.

Ideology - The colour scheme of this magazine is black and red. The black that the image is wearing connotates 'rebellion' which is conventional to the indie rock theme and genre, this connotation is echoed by the red is this is the traditional colour scheme for this genre. The colours red and black are both dark aggressive which contrasts the title of the magazine 'CLASH'. CLASH is a band that was a big rock band and went against the mainstream pop which echos the aggressive colours, and clash is also meaning conflict which further echos the aggressive colour scheme.

Institution - Clash is an award-winning (Magazine of the Year – PPA 2008) monthly music magazine bringing originality and independent opinion in a truly unique style.
While music continues to diversify and evolve, Clash endeavours to represent the crossover appeal of all genres of music for the more discerning fan. Every month Clash features the best new emerging bands alongside established acts and legends of the industry.
Clash magazine a strong design focus as well as industry related articles - Clash is dedicated to Music and Fashion, which makes it is a monthly favourite among artists and labels.
The producer of the 'CLASH' magazine is a man called John O'Rourke, he has a music magazine called 'john@clashmusic.com' which is a magazine that is a personal magazine that is made for CLASH magazine.

Audience - The audience of the magazine is people who like keeping up with indie rock and other music genres (excluding pop, R&B and other mainstream genres) this because the magazine's main audience are not mainstream lovers, so this magazine provides the music the audience likes and wants to know. The magazine also covers a bit of fashion which help spread their audience to a different audience which is not related to music, this is good because they are appealing and attracting more customers to purchase their magazine.

Representation - This magazine represents the non mainstream look on life,  this is shown by the colour scheme as black and red are rebellious colours and this is not mainstream, it represents that this magazine is for the rebellious people and can link to the audience as the audience is into this sort of genre and look etc.
The main image represents the audience of the magazine and how the magazine is trying to represent itself to the world, as the main image is wearing black he is seen as a rebellious character, this is echo'd by the fact that his hair is long and messy and he has big sunglasses covering his face, this relates to the audience by appealing to their non mainstream style.

Choice of Music Genre

My choice of music genre will be indie/indie rock, this is because I can find different magazines that are associated with this genre of music and I personally preffer music that isnt main stream.

these are some bands that are associated with this genre:

This album cover of 'THE KOOKS' is connoted as very indie rock because of the use of lighing, most of the picture is in darkness which is connoted as rebellious which is associated with indie rock, the attire of the band is a mix of retro and modern, this shows that they are not mainstream and therefore appeal to their target audience more.

this album cover of 'THE STROKES' is very retro which is not mainstreamand is again associated with the indie rock genre which is the audience they are aiming to appeal to. The colour scheme of this picture is cream, black and red. The black and red in this picture connotes a rebellious look, the cream makes the image as a whole look rather retro, which mixes with the writing which is also very retro and looks almost like a 'starsky and hutch' theme.

this album cover of 'THE PIDGEON DETECTIVES' is plain, the only colours it has is black and white which are two hugely contrasting colours, this shows rebellion and the style of genre they are projecting.

these are some videos of the bands shown above:

The Kooks
The Pigeon Detectives

The Strokes

LIIAR analysis of brief

L - The front page of my magazine will have a masthead at the top of the page, this is to let the audience what the tittle of the magazine is called, this will attract the audience to the magazine. The front page will also contain conventions such as screamers, left third, splash, kickers etc. These conventions will all play their part in attracting the audience. I will use a colour scheme that continues throughout my front page, contents page and double page spread to create a professional looking magazine which will look apealling to the audience. For my magazine i believe that a mid shot will be used to my front age as this is conventional to a magazine. For the contents page i would use a more than one picture to further the idea to the audience on what this magazine is all about. And for my double page spread i would use an image that will fill the pages and probably use a long shot or an extreme mid-shot.

I - My magazine would be in the indie/accoustic genre such as NME etc. The magazine will be aimed at being sold to the same audience as the NME this is because their magazine has the the same purposes and music genre as mine, such as, not aiming their magazine at the main stream audience.

I - My magazine will be created to be in the indie/accoustic genre, therefore my morals, message and values will be constructed to suite the audiences persona, this means that my masseges etc, will be similar to the audiences ideology. This means that my magazine will show a mixture of calmness to the accoustic audiences whereas the maessege etc will be more up beat and 'new music' related to the audience. For example i will convey a calm messege if i chose an accoustic based magazine whereas i would convey a non-caring 'cool' messege if i chose indie.

A - My target audience will be fans of accoustic or indie, this includes such music such as the Kooks, the Strokes, Pidgeon Detectives etc. for indie, but more Ed sheeran etc. for accoustic. The audience will be people like, accoustic guitarists, indie fans, people interested in 'new music' (not main stream) etc.

R - If i decide to make an indie magazine I will make the main image (depending on what the main storyline is, to look negative if the band/artist is a stereotypical 'bad' group/artist, this is because I am trying to relate the band or artist to the genre they are in and not only that, but the target audience they appeal to.
Whereas if i make an accoustic magazine I will try to convey an emotional, positive representation because this is stereotypically associated to being linked to the accoustic music genre.

The Brief

Main task: The front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine. All images and text used must be original, produced by you - minimum of four images.

Evaluation of college magazine

Language-
The masthead of the magazine is called 'WYKE' this is because this is the name of the college i am doing the magazine for is Wyke College.
I edited a banner on the front cover using Photoshop; I did this to draw the audience's attention to the headline. I decided to have a skyline on my magazine cover as it looks appealing, and draws the audience to the additional information that it contains, which is also above the masthead which will also be in the line of sight for the audience.
The left third of the magazine contains different stories and information that may attract different potential customers, this is very important to the magazine because customers want to know if they are going to read and enjoy most of the stories, and as the magazine is a college magazine its purpose is to inform, educate and also entertain.
I made the headings in the left third of my front cover bigger than the rest so they stand out and catch the audience's attention, therefore encouraging them to buy the magazine.
The reason i put this image more towards the right is because he relates to the main story on my magazine cover and is therefore important to the magazine and will interest the audience as they can see who they are going to be reading about.
Ideology-
I decided to stick to only three colours, (yellow, purple, and orange) this is because too many colours would have made the magazine look un-professional. I chose yellow and orange, because the colour yellow is vibrant and bright, this shows happy, positive connotations. I chose the colour purple as it represents wyke as this reflects what college the magazine is for. The reason the headlines are big and yellow is because this is a bright, attractive, positive colour which will attract the audience to buy the magazine. The reason i made the kickers of the headlines orange is because it sticks to my colour scheme (yellow, orange and purple) and also because is different to the headings and stands out, plus the connotation for orange is calm, fresh and sophisticated which will attract young students in a college who are the target audience for this magazine.
Institution-
The institution for my magazine is Wyke College as this is where the magazine will be sold, made and designed.
Audience-
I decided that my target audience is college students, this means they will be of the demographical age of 16 - 24, my magazine will be aimed at college students because it is a college magazine, therefore the audience is relevant to the context, however i will have a secondary audience of teachers within the college this is because news within the college is also relevant not only to the people that attend college but also the people that work there.

As my audience is college students the won’t have much money and will fall under the E bracket of psychographics, this means my magazine will have to be priced low, or be free as students do not have money for such luxuries such as magazines. My college magazine will be published weekly as this keeps students updated with current affairs within the college. My magazine will also be free, this is because students fall under the E bracket, through my magazine being free it means that everyone within the college can still access the college magazine and all the latest college news, which is important to students, also because my college magazine is published weekly rather than monthly, this would have made the magazine more expensive if i held a price for the magazine.

Representation-
The main image in my front cover is smiling which shows that he is happy, this also represents the college in a good way as it shows he is happy with the college, which shows the audience that this college is a happy place to be, whereas if the main image was unhappy, it would have a negative look and not be appealing to the audience.

Start of my College Magazine

In this picture a have put my main image and background together, i did this using photoshop, i cropped my main image out of a seperate photo and placed the image on top of my background. I then blended the main image into the background to mage the edges less sharp and therefore makes the image look more realistic and creates a realistic look of the main image and background together.

This is an image of a draft layout for my front cover of the college magazine that i am creating. This shows that i will be using conventions such as masthead, screamers, splash, barcode, skyline etc.

pictures for front cover

I am using this image as my background because this image shows the logo and name of the college i am chosing to feature in my magazine, it also shows a good view of what the entrance to the college looks like which makes for a related background to feature in the magazine.

I didn't use this image because the main image in the picture is in a long shot which is not conventional to a magazine as a magazine would use a mid-shot.

Although i like this image, I decided not to use this image as my background as I prefered the image i used because that image showed the entrance of the college which i thought had more relevance to a magazine cover.

i did not use this image as my background as the shot is slightly tilted and is not completely horizontal, and their are other people in the image which will take attention away from the main image.

i did not use this image because the lighting is bright in the bottom right corner and dull on the left side of the image which i believe is not very appealing to the audience.

i did not use this image as the main image is not in a mid-shot and is not conventional to a magazine.

i was going to use this image but i decided not to use it as the top of his head is cut off, and it was also very hard to fit him onto my background as he had to be placed with his head at the top which prevented me placing my masthead in a conventional area (across the top).

i used this image because this is conventional to a magazine, as it is a mid-shot, it was much easier to fit and blend into my background, he also looks happy which gives a good representation to the college.

i did not use this image because the main image  has his arms folded and does not give a very good representation to the college.
This image was not chosen because i do not belive that the image would have fit into the front cover aswell as the image i chose simply because of the position his body is in.

i did not use this image as on of the people have their eyes closed and they to not look very interested in the work they are dooing which gives off a bad representation, and this image is not a mid-shot of one image and is therefore not conventional to a magazine.

i did not use this image as my background because even though it gives a good view of the main corridor in the Oak building inside the Wyke campus, i believe that the lighting is rather dull and the main image (person) that i am using will not fit and blend into the picture aswell as the other background.
